All The New Horror Movies We Can’t Wait To Watch In 202

From NIGHT SWIM to TERRIFIER 3 and BEETLEJUICE 2, we’ve got your Horror Movies release dates and TBD’s for the new year.

2023 was another banner year for horror, and we’ve been quite spoiled in the last several years with this bountiful feast. As we reflect on our favorites from this year, we’re also looking forward to some major horror releasing in 2024. From original horror like Blumhouse’s Night Swim and this summer’s Trap, to familiar franchises like The First Omen and Beetlejuice 2 we’re in for a treat.”Radio Silence Untitled Monster Movie” added a dash of mystery to 2024, slated to drop in April. We had no idea what to expect, but we’ve since gotten the title and a trailer, and we know we’ll be at the theater opening weekend.

Here’s a complete list of all the new horror movies releasing in 2024. Some without concrete release dates, and some with very little details, but as always we’ll add more information as it comes in, and we expect this list is going to grow quite a bit!

1. Night Swim – Jan 5 : Horror Movies

night-swim-trailer-header

The first major horror release of 2024 hails from Blumhouse. Our very own Scott Wampler sums it up rather nicely, “from the looks of things, this creepy aquatic tale may very well do for swimming pools what Steven Spielberg’s Jaws once did for the ocean.” Based on the acclaimed 2014 short film by Rod Blackhurst and Bryce McGuire, the film stars Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as Ray Waller, a former major league baseball player forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness, who moves into a new home with his concerned wife Eve (Oscar nominee Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin), teenage daughter Izzy (Amélie Hoeferle, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) and young son Elliot (Gavin Warren, Fear the Walking Dead)

Secretly hoping, against the odds, to return to pro ball, Ray persuades Eve that the new home’s shimmering backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids and provide physical therapy for him. But a dark secret in the home’s past will unleash a malevolent force that will drag the family under, into the depths of inescapable terror.

2. Destroy All Neighbors — January 12 Horror Movies

Destroy All Neighbors

William Brown (Jonah Ray Rodrigues), a neurotic, self-absorbed musician determined to finish his prog-rock magnum opus, faces a creative roadblock in the form of a noisy and grotesque neighbor named Vlad (Alex Winter). Finally working up the nerve to demand that Vlad keep it down, William inadvertently decapitates him. But, while attempting to cover up one murder, William’s accidental reign of terror causes victims to pile up and become undead corpses who torment and create more bloody detours on his road to prog-rock Valhalla. Destroy All Neighbors is a twisted splatter-comedy about a deranged journey of self-discovery full of goopy practical FX, a well-known ensemble cast, and LOTS of blood.

Stream Destroy All Neighbors exclusively on Shudder January 12.

3. True Detective: Night Country — January 14 : Horror Movies

TrueDetective2 Cropped

Ok, this one isn’t a movie, but it absolutely needs to be on your radar. There’s a reason folks are already raving about the fourth season of True Detective and widely calling it the best season since the first. Issa López takes the helm as writer and director and steers us into the arctic for a horror story that masterfully fits into the world of True Detective, while also making it wholly her own. Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star as local law enforcement officials at odds with one another, and pretty much everything and everyone around them. With nods to snowy classics like The Thing, López crafts a mystery in the dark, and trust me when I say this season is an absolute feast for horror fans.

True Detective: Night Country premieres on HBO Max and is also streaming on Max Sunday, January 14 at 9 p.m. ET and PT. Stay tuned for our cast interviews from the True Detective red carpet premiere.

4. Dario Argento Panico – February 2 : Horror Movies

Dario Argento Panico

The legendary director gets the documentary treatment. What’s special about this is that Argento himself takes part in the film, along with an impressive list of interviewees includes Asia Argento, Fiore Argento, Nicolas Winding Refn, Gaspar Noè, Guillermo Del Toro, Michel Savia and Lamberto Bava. Here’s the official synopsis:

“In the secluded ambiance of hotel rooms, Dario Argento crafted his greatest cinematic creations, seeking solace from the outside world to delve into his nightmares. Now, he finds himself in a hotel room to return to the very setting that ignited his creative fervor to conclude his latest script and participate in an intimate interview, all while being followed by a film crew documenting his life for a movie about his illustrious career.”

Dario Argento Panico is streaming on Shudder February 2

5. Baghead — February 8 : Horror Movies

Baghead

We don’t know a ton about this just yet, but Night Swim director Bryce McGuire is one of the writers on this one, which follows a young woman who inherits a run-down pub and discovers a dark secret within its basement. Enter Baghead – a shape-shifting creature that will let you speak to lost loved ones, but not without consequence. You know, just once we’d love to commune with the dead without dealing with consequences! We’ll keep you posted as we unravel Baghead‘s secrets.

Baghead will be in UK theaters January 26.

6. Lisa Frankenstein — February 9 : Horror Movies

lisa-frankenstein-trailer

Diablo Cody penned this neon horror-comedy set in the ’80s, starring Freaky‘s Kathryn Newton and Riverdale‘s Cole Sprouse, and we are pretty fuckin excited about it. Nothing says Valentine’s Day plans like a little teenage necromancy. Liza Soberano, Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest and Carla Gugino round out this stellar coming of RAGE love story about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.

Terrifying sounds suggest something monstrous at large in this landscape, something that could kill or steal them away. As relationships in the group fracture, the determination of one young woman reveals the terrible actions taken to survive.

Directed by Robert Morgan (who co-wrote the screenplay with Robin King), Stopmotion revolves around a stop-motion animator by the name of Ella whose latest project might just be driving her to the brink of madness. 12. Late Night With The Devil – March 22 : Horror Movies

late night with the devil

Late Night with the Devil has been an incredibly popular film on the fest circuit. We’ve been tracking this one for a bit, in no small part because filmmakers Cameron and Colin Cairnes (100 Bloody Acresclaim to have gotten the idea to cast Dastmalchian after reading his love letter to late-night horror hosts in issue #11 of FANGORIA.

The film finds 1970s talk show host Jack Delroy (David Dastmalchian) on his last legs, wrung out by personal tragedy and in need of a ratings win. His plan to feature as a guest a young girl who is allegedly possessed seems like a Halloween night layup… until the cameras roll and all hell literally breaks loose.

Late Night With The Devil is in theaters March 22 and streaming on Shudder April 19.

17. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire – April 12 : Horror Movies

Godzilla X Kong

Regardless of how you pronounce it, Godzilla x Kong is gonna’ rule. Serving as a sequel to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, but this time the two iconic monsters are no longer at odds with one another.

18. Abigail — April 19 : Horror Movies

Abigail vampire movie 2024

Update: We finally have a title for what we’ve been referring to as Radio Silence Untitled Monster Movie. And as catchy as that is, we sure are glad to get both a title and a trailer for Abigail.

The mystery plot is finally revealed, and we are getting a child vampire ballerina. Back in May, we shared a tad bit more info as to what the plot might be, “Plot details are being kept in the trunk of a car, but the project was at one point titled Dracula’s Daughter. That project centered on a group of kidnappers who abduct a band of young people, one of whom ends up being the titular character. Woe then betides the kidnappers.”

Now we have the official synopsis:

After a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl.

Hell yeah, we can’t wait! Abigail is in theaters April 19.

19. Return to Silent Hill — April 26 : Horror Movies

Return to Silent Hill

Pyramid Head will be making a triumphant return later this year! Director Christopher Gans has also confirmed that the film will feature ‘a few nods to P.T.’, referencing the ill-fated but utterly terrifying playable teaser for Hideo Kojima’s sadly cancelled Silent Hills. The film will follow James (Irvine), a man broken after being separated from his one true love (Jigsaw‘s Hannah Emily Anderson). When a mysterious letter calls him back to Silent Hill in search of her, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil. As James descends deeper into the darkness, he encounters terrifying figures both familiar and new and begins to question his own sanity as he struggles to make sense of reality and hold on long enough to save his lost love.

Wouldn’t you know it, mere hours after publishing this list, we get to move Renny Harlin’s The Strangers from TBD to a solid May 17 release date! It’s a game of survival when a couple, played by Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale) & Gabriel Basso (The Night Agent), have to survive the night while being terrorized by masked strangers in a remote Airbnb in Oregon. Read our interview with director Renny Harlin. Co-starring Richard Brake (Doom, Kingsman: The Secret Service).

24. A Quiet Place: Day One –June 28 : Horror Movies

A Quiet Place (2018)

Fans of the Quiet Place universe can (silently) celebrate because the prequel is almost here! Some new faces we’ll be seeing include Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou and Denis O’Hare. The franchise spinoff is written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig), and deviates from the Abbott family story. 25. Trap – August 2 : Horror Movies

Josh Hartnett PENNY DREADFUL

PENNY DREADFUL (2014)

We don’t know much about M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming movie hitting theaters in summer 2024, but we do know the cast includes Josh Hartnett and Hayley Mills, which is exciting enough in itself.

26. Alien: Romulus August 16: Horror Movies

Alien: Romulus

Officially, this one is currently being referred to as “Untitled Alien Event Movie.” Unofficially (and on IMDB), it’s been referred to as Alien: Romulus. Whatever the final title ends up being, we know for certain the star of the movie, Cailee Spaeny revealed in an interview with Variety that this installment is “supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie” from the original Alien franchise. Starring alongside Spaeny are Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu. So far, the details of the standalone story remain tightly under wraps, but with a whole fifty-seven years of plot time to play with, it really could go anywhere.

27. Beetlejuice 2 — September 6: Horror Movies

Burton-Beetlejuice-2

After lots of rumors and false starts, Beetlejuice 2 wrapped in November. It’s a real movie and we get to see it in 2024. As Scott Wampler notes, “We don’t know much about Beetlejuice 2 (though we can say with certainty that it won’t be Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, another iteration of this sequel that almost got made once upon a time), but the few things we do know are intriguing: for one thing, Beetlejuice will have a wife, played by Monica Bellucci. We also know that Jenna Ortega will be playing the daughter of Winona Ryder’s Lydia Deetz, and that Willem Dafoe is playing a former B-movie action star who’s now working as a detective in the afterlife. How any of this fits together is anyone’s guess, but we’re admittedly very curious to find out.

“In addition to the names mentioned above, Beetlejuice 2 will also star Catherine O’Hara and Justin Theroux.

28. Speak No Evil – September 13: Horror Movies

Speak No Evil (2022)

SPEAK NO EVIL (2022)

Update: Originally slated for an August 9 release, Speak No Evil moves to Friday, September 13th. Universal also has “Untitled Blumhouse Productions Film” on the calendar for the same date, we’ll keep them both on here for now, but they very well could be one and the same!

Speak No Evil was certainly one of the most brutal movies of 2022. As a matter of fact, it was one of the more brutal offerings in recent memory. An American remake is on the way, starring James McAvoy and directed by Eden Lake‘s James Watkins from Christian and Mad Tafdrup’s original screenplay. Just in case you’ve forgotten the synopsis of Speak No Evil (and it isn’t seared into your nightmares like it is for us), in the original 2022 movie, a Danish family visits a Dutch family they met on a holiday. In a tale of killer good manners, what was supposed to be an idyllic weekend slowly starts unraveling as the Danes try to stay polite in the face of unpleasantness.

Focus Features describes Eggers’ remake as “a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.” We’ve been teased, our appetites have been whetted, and we are ready to spend Christmas 2024 with this blood-sucking beast.

34. Jordan Peele’s Fourth Film – TBD: Horror Movies

NOPE (2022)

NOPE (2022)

Update: No sooner had we published this list than Universal removed Peele’s untitled fourth film from their 2024 roster. Originally slated for a Christmas Day release, the plot thickens as now we don’t know when this mystery movie will hit theater screens.

The official IMDB title is “Untitled Fourth Film Directed by Jordan Peele,” and the official IMDB synopsis is “Plot kept under wraps.” But it’s classified as a horror/mystery/thriller and that’s got us pretty dang excited.

35. 2024 Release Dates TBD Horror Movies

THE STRANGERS Trilogy First Look_1

THE STRANGERS Trilogy

These titles don’t have solid release dates yet, but they will allegedly be landing at some point in Horror Movies 2024, and we’ll update as those release dates are announced!
